ADK has begun implementing several infrastructure improvement projects, some of the largest in recent history. The projects are identified in the most recent version of the Heart Lake Property master plan that was approved by the ADK Board of Directors in 2011.
To date, the High Peaks Information Center (HPIC) has been completely renovated.
- The interior now has an open floor-space plan, creating a more enjoyable experience for customers and making it easier for hikers to access information they need before hitting the trail.
- A covered porch has been added to the south side, where the door to the twenty-four-hour bathroom is located. (In 2018, a large covered porch will also be added to the east side, offering visitors more space to make last-minute preparations be fore embarking on their hike, or to relax and share stories about their adventures.)
- Other projects completed in 2017 include a new water well and site-clearing for future building.
STARTING THIS SPRING work will commence on construction of a combination wash house/concession stand that will service a new campground loop. Located adjacent to the HPIC, this new amenity will be available to campground guests and day visitors alike. A variety of prepared food options will be offered, along with several beverage choices. After a long day of tramping, hikers will have the option of a celebratory meal before driving home.
The bulk of this construction should be completed by August. Access to the HPIC will be maintained during construction, but expect some reduction in regular services until the project is finished.
Past campground guests will be excited to hear that the wash house in the Wilderness Campground will be completely renovated for the 2018 season, with all new showers, fixtures, and finishes to the interior, including properly sized water heaters to ensure sufficient hot water for all guests.
All of these improvement projects would not be possible without your generous support. To make a donation toward any of them, please contact Lynn Shanks, ADK Development Director, at 518-668-4447.
