Trailhead Parking

Parking at trailheads in the Forest Preserve is on a first-come, first-served basis. Please obey local parking laws and use good sense when trying to find a place at a crowded trailhead. There is a fee to park at Heart Lake (Adirondak Loj) and the Garden (Johns Brook Lodge trailhead), but there is no fee at other trailheads in the High Peaks. Be aware that parking lots at major trailheads fill quickly in summer. The Heart Lake lot is usually full by 9 or 10 a.m. on summer weekends and earlier on holidays, while the Garden usually reaches capacity late Friday or early Saturday on all weekends from early May through late October.

Parking at Heart Lake

The daily parking fee at the hikers’ lot at the Heart Lake Program Center (adjacent to HPIC) is $5 for members and $12 for nonmembers. After 1 p.m., the rate drops to $2.50 for members and $6 for nonmembers. The weekly rate (5-7 days) is $20 for member and $48 for nonmembers. Canadian money is accepted at the current exchange rate.

ADK Members are eligible to purchase a $50 season parking pass good until December 31st, 2019. This pass is $30 if purchased after July 1st, 2019 and only $20 if purchased after October 1st, 2019.

Your parking fee helps the Adirondack Mountain Club in the following areas:

-Public service facilities and trailhead information
-Backcountry stewardship programs
-Improving and maintaining trails in the Adirondack and Catskill Parks
-Educational programs on backcountry use, outdoor recreation and natural history
-Conservation of park resources

From May through October, a parking attendant is present 8 a.m.-5 p.m. In the off-season the parking booth is staffed Friday afternoons and 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. on weekends. If the parking booth is closed, please pay and get a permit at the self-service box on the side of the booth.

When the lot fills, free overflow parking is available a mile back down the Adirondack Loj Road on Meadows Lane (South Meadows Campground Area) and in the small lot at its end. Limit parking here to one side of the road to allow DEC emergency vehicle access to the Marcy Dam truck trail. (The 2.6-mile dirt road offers an alternative hiking route to the Dam.)

Parking at Heart Lake is free for guests staying at the Adirondak Loj, Wilderness Campground, or at ADK Cabins on property. Click here to learn more about ADK’s Heart Lake accommodations.

ADK offers two EV chargers as a complimentary service to all of the guests and visitors of the Heart Lake Program Center. To ensure this service is available to all EV drivers, ADK requests that you relocate your vehicle to another parking spot as soon as possible after you are finished using the charger. For assistance, please see an attendant inside  the High Peaks Information Center. Thank you for supporting ADK!

Parking at the Garden

The Garden Parking Lot at the Garden Trailhead – one of the main access points to the eastern High Peak Wilderness – will be closed to public motor vehicles during the spring and summer of 2019 due to the replacement of the Johns Brook Bridge. Construction of the replacement bridge, located in Keene Valley, Essex County, will begin as soon as weather and road conditions allow and is expected to last through the summer. No vehicles or pedestrians will be able to pass the bridge once construction is started through completion of the project. The Town of Keene appreciates the public’s patience and understanding in this matter. Please see the Town of Keene website for shuttle information and other hikes in the Keene area.
