ADK Cycle Outing
Join us for the 1st ADK Cycle Outing. Enjoy road biking in the North Country—travel the routes in the recent guide “Cycling Routes of the Saint Lawrence River Valley and Northern Adirondacks” by Tom Ortmeyer and John Barron. Cycle Outing is organized by the authors. Each route has a description, map, gps coordinates, and intersection instructions.
The rides range from about 20 miles to 70 miles or more. Multiple trips will be offered every day, with 5 to 10 riders per trip. All trips are led by other cycle outing participants and vary in length and difficulty. You can select the trip that meets your interest and skill level.
The rides focus on the area encompassed by the Saint Lawrence River and the north flow rivers that flow from the Adirondacks to the St. Lawrence. There are short to long rides, and range from rides that are nearly flat to rides with challenging climbs. Some trips will focus strictly on cycling, while others rides have the potential for spending as much time relaxing and sightseeing as riding. Many rides focus on the quiet town roads in lightly populated areas, with some portions on the broad paved shoulders of main highways. Several rides are across the river in southeastern Ontario and western Quebec. (Passport or enhanced license required).
The bicycle outing takes place in June, and is based in on-campus housing on the Clarkson University campus in Potsdam, NY. Each morning begins with breakfast on campus. After breakfast, meet your group and head out for the ride.
Following each day’s trip, return to your room and enjoy a hot shower (bathroom in every room with stand up shower, laundry facilities available on campus) and a snooze if desired. Then enjoy the fellowship of other cyclers in the lounge. The day’s rides will be discussed, and trip plans for the next day will be developed. Dinner is on your own—after dinner, enjoy some of the summer evening activities the area is known for. Or simply kick back and relax.
The cost includes your lodging and breakfast each day. Many of the rides will stop for lunch at a café or for deli takeout, so lunch is not included in the trip price. Dinner is also on your own—you can dine on campus or enjoy one of the area restaurants—including a number of outdoor dining opportunities. The dorm will also have a group refrigerator and food prep area.
Prices DO NOT include bicycles, helmets (helmets are required on all rides), lunch or dinner. Participants need to be capable of transporting their bikes to trip start points. While there are a number of trips that start from campus, it will be necessary to drive to many of the trip starting points. Prices do include breakfast, pillows, blankets, sheets, towels, washcloths and bath products. There is a bicycle shop in Potsdam, and several others across the area, but participants should bring inner tubes, etc.
ADK membership is required to attend the Cycle Outing. To join the ADK visit: www.adk.org.
The outing will run June 10-15, 2018. Registration will open at 1pm on the first day of the outing. We will meet in the lounge that day in the late afternoon to plan the next day’s rides. On the last day of the outing, we will check out of the dorm rooms after breakfast. We will schedule a range of rides that day for those wanting an outing before heading home.
Trip price is $445 in shared double room, $595 for single room. A limited number of participants who stay off campus can be accommodated. Check with the trip leader about availability and cost.
Reservations are by mail only. A $100 per person non-refundable deposit is required. The minimum number of participants is 10, with 30 being the target number of registrants. Registration will begin when the trip is announced in Adirondac. Prices are subject to change. The balance is due May 1, refunds may not be possible for cancellations after this date,
