A Great First Hike for Children
Elevation: 2120 ft
Ascent: 460 ft
Round-Trip Distance: 1.2 miles
Location: Owls Head Acres off Route 73 south of Cascade Lakes
Region: Lake Placid/High Peaks region
This is a great trail for children because, even though it is steep in places, you will arrive at lookouts all along the way. The whole ascent is only 460 feet in 0.6 miles. I took my older granddaughter (along with her Mom) up during her fifth year. There were many other folks on the trail who were kind enough to encourage Hannah and compliment her on her achievement.
Note: As of 2017, landowners reluctantly decided to limit use of this trail to weekdays only and require that all parking be on NY 73. With this closure, the Town of Keene, the Adirondack Land Trust, and DEC have begun a coordinated effort to create a new trail and adequate parking on some currently undeveloped land that would likely eventually become Forest Preserve. As of 2019, however, there is no firm date for completion of a new trail.
