Heart Lake Program Center

FROM THE SOUTH: Take the Northway (Rt. 87) to Exit 30, Turn left on Rt. 73 toward Keene and Lake Placid. Continue on Rt. 73 for 26.5 miles. One mile before the Lake Placid ski jumps, turn left on Adirondack Loj Road (High Peaks Wilderness Trailhead Sign), travel five miles to the Loj at the end of the road.

FROM THE NORTH: Take the Northway (Rt. 87) to Exit 34, Keeseville. Follow 9N to Jay and Rt. 86 to Lake Placid. Turn left on Rt. 73 before going through Lake Placid. In three miles, look for High Peaks Wilderness Trailhead sign (one mile past the Lake Placid ski jumps) and turn right onto Adirondack Loj Road, travel five miles to the Loj at the end of the road.

FROM THE WEST: Rt. 3 or 86 into Saranac Lake. Continue on Rt. 86 through Lake Placid. At the third traffic light, turn right onto Rt. 73 towards Keene. In three miles, look for High Peaks Wilderness Trailhead sign (one mile past the Lake Placid ski jumps) and turn right onto Adirondack Loj Road, travel five miles to the Loj at the end of the road.

Adirondak Loj

Welcome to the Adirondack Mountain Club! We hope that this information letter will answer any questions that you might have about your upcoming stay at the Adirondak Loj.

  • Check-In is after 3:00 p.m. – Please check in at the Front Desk upon arrival
  • Check-Out is by 10:00 a.m.
  • Late Arrivals – The Front Desk is open 24 hours, please check in upon arrival
  • Reservations are held until 9:00 a.m. the day after the reserved date of arrival, if you do not arrive and have not contacted the Front Desk, you are responsible for the entire cost of your reservation and the reservation will be forfeited at that time.
  • Quiet Hours are from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. After 10:00 p.m. we request that your party use flashlights or headlamps when entering the coed bunkrooms or the family rooms. Please be aware that the Loj walls are thin and noises carry.
  • A Front Desk Night Manager is at the Front Desk all night and is available in case of an emergency or serious issue. If the Night Manager is not at the Front Desk, they are conducting property rounds and will return within 20 minutes.
  • Breakfast Bell is rung at the start of breakfast.
  • Breakfast is served daily from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and is included in your Loj stay.
  • Trail Lunches are available for an additional charge; please sign up during breakfast.
  • Dinner is available for an additional charge and is a one-time seating at 6:15 p.m., served family style. Reservations must be made at the Front Desk by 11:00 a.m. If you do not arrive for your dinner reservation and have not contacted the Front Desk, you will be responsible for the cost of your dinner.
  • Vegetarian/Vegan Meals and most food allergies can be accommodated with 24-hour advance notice.
  • Soda may be purchased anytime. Selections and prices are listed in the Great Room.
  • Hot Drinks are complimentary for Loj guests and are available in the Great Room.
  • Alcohol (wine and beer) is served in the evening. You may not bring your own alcohol into the public areas of the Loj.
  • Linens and towels are provided in all guest rooms.
  • Bathrooms and showers are shared for all guest rooms.
  • Pets are prohibited in the Loj.
  • Smoking is not permitted in or near the Loj.
  • Canoe, Kayak, and SUP rentals are available at the Front Desk to property guests and ADK members only. An adult must accompany children under 16 years old.
  • Telephones and televisions are not provided in the Loj. There is no cell service on the property. A pay phone is located at the front entrance of the Loj.
  • Internet is available to Loj guests only. Please be respectful of other guests’ right to privacy and solitude. Turn off or mute notifications and do not live chat or make phone calls in the Great Room or guest rooms.  Please do not bring electronics into the dining room during meal times. 
  • Children under 12 years old are half price for breakfast/dinner and lodging with the exception of cot charges. Children under 2 years old stay free.
  • Groups are subject to additional gratuity added to their bill. Rates vary depending upon facility usage; contact the Front Desk for further information.
  • Methods of payment – guests may pay their bills by cash, check, or credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, and American Express accepted).
  • Tips for Loj Crew (wait staff/housekeeping) are accepted and appreciated. There is a ‘Crew Tip Box’ located at the Front Desk.
  • Damages/Housekeeping Fees – ADK reserves the right to charge your credit card for any damages to ADK property or for extreme uncleanliness.
  • Member rates – a 10% member discount is available to ADK members on food and lodging.
  • The High Peaks Information Center (HPIC), operated by ADK, is located at the Van Hoevenberg trailhead parking area. The building is open year-round; hours may vary during the off-season. The HPIC has a small retail shop with ski and snowshoe rentals, ADL logo items, snacks, books, maps, and assorted hiking gear. ADK staff are there to provide weather and trail information and to assist with questions.
  • NEVER SWIM ALONE. A minimum of two adults 18 years of age or older, must be present whenever this swimming facility is in use, with at least one adult on the beachfront.
  • THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR ADEQUATE SUPERVISION. Children under 16 years of age must be accompanied to the bathing facility by a parent or guardian, or similar adult responsible for their safety and behavior.
  • IN AN EMERGENCY, NOTIFY THE FACILITY OPERATOR AND CONTACT HELP IMMEDIATELY. A free telephone is provided at this facility. Telephone numbers for the nearest emergency medical service are posted.
  • Only use this facility during posted hours of operation and swim only in the designated bathing area. Don’t drink alcohol and swim. Injuries can be prevented and safety is everyone’s responsibility. If you notice any problems with the water quality or the absence of safety equipment, please notify the facility operator.

Wilderness Campground at Heart Lake

Welcome to the Adirondack Mountain Club! We hope that this information letter will answer any questions that you might have about your upcoming stay at our Wilderness Campground.

A maximum of six people is permitted per campsite, lean-to, or canvas cabin. Showers, sinks, and toilets are available at the washhouse. Here is some information on the Wilderness Campground to help make your stay more enjoyable:

  • Check-in is after 2:00 p.m. – Please check in at the Front Desk upon arrival.
  • Check-out is by 11:00 a.m.
  • Parking is included for two vehicles during your stay from 2:00 p.m. on the day of arrival until 11:00 a.m. on the day of departure. Please have vehicle and license plate information ready at check-in.
  • Quiet hours are strictly enforced from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. Please be considerate of other campers.
  • Late Arrivals – The Front Desk is open 24 hours, please check in upon arrival. Please be aware of other people in the campground and keep voices and other noises to an absolute minimum.
  • Reservations are held until 9:00 a.m. the next day after the reserved day of arrival, if you do not show for your site and have not contacted us, you are responsible for the entire cost of your reservation and the reservation will be forfeited at that time.
  • The Front Desk Night Manager is at the Front Desk all night and is available in case of an emergency or serious problem. If the Night Manager is not there they are doing property rounds and will return within 20 minutes.
  • Radios, generators, and other loud electronic devices are prohibited in the campground. Please respect the rights of others to a wilderness experience.
  • Trash dumpsters and recycling are located near the Information Center. Do not leave garbage unattended at your sites. Please clean your sites before you leave.
  • Black Bears and other woodland animals frequent this campground. Keep your food and toiletries in a hard-top car with windows shut or in a bear canister. Any items left out will be confiscated from your site.
  • Pets are permitted provided they are on a leash and are not disturbing other campers.
  • Firewood is for sale at the Information Center. Please do not gather or cut wood. Please keep fire within the designated fireplace. (You may bring firewood as long as it is purchased within 50 miles – NYS Regulation).
  • Tents are not allowed at canvas cabins. Tents are not allowed on lean-to sites unless it is a freestanding tent (no stakes) and it is set up inside of the lean-to. A maximum of three tents is allowed at each tent site.
  • Washing of any kind is prohibited in Heart Lake or at water spigots. There is a dishwashing station outside at each washhouse or you may wash at your site, wipe plates clean prior to washing and scatter gray water away from your site.
  • Canoe, Kayak, and SUP rentals are available at the Adirondak Loj. An adult must accompany children under 16 years old.
  • Canvas Cabins – Guests will need to provide their own linens, sleeping bags, and pillows. NO open flames or gas/propane lanterns inside the cabin. Only battery-powered lanterns are allowed.
  • Children under 12 are half price for the additional per person charge. Children under 2 years old are free.
  • Methods of payment­ – Guests may pay their bills by cash, check, or credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, and American Express accepted).
  • Member rates – a 10% member discount is available to ADK members for camping.

Important additional information to know about winter camping at the Heart Lake Wilderness Campground: 

  • We have a year-round heated wash house with toilets and showers. 
  • Canvas Cabin platforms are available in the winter. No tent is provided, guests must bring their own freestanding tent for the platform.  Platforms are 14 feet x 16 feet (4.3 meters x 4.9 meters).
  • Snow removal – the driveway is plowed and accessible by vehicle, campsites and platforms are not shoveled. 

Camping Yurt

The Camping Yurt, located 8 miles south of Lake Placid on ADK’s Heart Lake property, is part of the Wilderness Campground and within ADK’s Education Yurt Village.  When not being used for programs the yurt is available as a rental unit.   

The education yurts were constructed in 2018 almost entirely by volunteers. The Education Yurt Village stands as a symbol of ADK’s commitment to educate and promote the responsible recreational use and protection of the New York State forest preserve.

What to Expect: 

The camping yurt consists of one large room (20’ diameter) with 2 sets of twin bunk beds (mattresses provided) and a seating area.  It is necessary for you to bring your own bedding/sleeping bag, including pillows and bath towels. The yurt has electric heat and lights and does not have running water (potable water is available nearby).  There is a nearby heated washhouse/restroom that has showers as well.  For your safety and the benefit of future guests, smoking is prohibited in the yurts. There is an outdoor fire pit and picnic table for your exclusive use; the other yurts will not be used during your stay.     

Guests checking into the yurt should go to the Front Desk at the Adirondak Loj to register and pick up the key.

  • No Open Flames or cooking inside the yurt, there is an outdoor fire pit and picnic table. 
  • Heat will be on upon arrival; you may adjust the temperature as needed.  Please note in the colder winter months the inside temperature with heat is about 55 degrees Fahrenheit; please dress and plan accordingly. 
  • Snow may slide off the roof during the winter months and cause some noise
  • Quiet hours are from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
  • Pets are not allowed in the yurts. 
  • Radios, generators, and other loud electronic devices are prohibited in the campground. Please respect the rights of others to a wilderness experience.

There are restrooms, maps, and information panels on the walls. There is a retail shop that has ski and snowshoe rentals, snacks, books, maps, and assorted hiking gear. The ADK staff person operating the retail shop is also there to advise you about weather and trail information and to help you with most of your questions. Please ask an ADK staff person for the store hours.
  • NEVER SWIM ALONE. A minimum of two adults 18 years of age or older, must be present whenever this swimming facility is in use, with at least one adult on the beachfront.

Wiezel Trails Cabin

The Wiezel Trails Cabin, located 8 miles south of Lake Placid on ADK’s Heart Lake property, houses ADK’s professional trail crews during summer months (May-October) and is available as a rental unit, accommodating groups up to 16 people, for the remainder of the year (November-April). Funding for the Trails Cabin was made possible through solicited contributions. The building was constructed almost entirely by volunteers. Officially dedicated on June 15, 1991, the Wiezel Trails Cabin stands as a symbol of ADK’s commitment to maintain trails and promote the responsible use and protection of the forest preserve.

Guests checking into the Wiezel Trails Cabin should go to the Front Desk at the Adirondak Loj to register and pick up the key.

What to expect:

Four Bunkrooms in the cabin, each containing two sets of bunk beds, can accommodate a maximum of 16 people. It is necessary for you to bring your own bedding, including pillows, pillowcases, and bath towels. The Trails Cabin has electricity (heat is electric) as well as hot and cold running water. The men’s and women’s washrooms include showers. The kitchen, complete with refrigerator and electric stove, is equipped with the items listed on the inventory below.  For your safety and the benefit of future guests, smoking is prohibited in the cabin.

Before you leave:

The Wiezel Trails Cabin is designed to operate as a self-service facility.

We ask that you give the brooms and mop a good workout and leave everything as neat and clean as you would like to find it.

  • Sweep floors
  • Clean and mop bathrooms
  • Clean and put away all dishes, pots, and pans.
  • Turn thermostats down to 50° F in all rooms.
  • Turn off all lights and exhaust fans
  • Deposit all garbage in dumpsters at the H.P.I.C.
  • Lock Door.

Return key to the Loj Front Desk. If the key is lost there will be a $25 service charge added to your bill.

Tyler Cabin

Tyler Cabin, located 8 miles south of Lake Placid at ADK’s Heart Lake Program Center, consists of a main living room (kitchen/dining area), two bedrooms, one room with a queen bed and another room with two twin beds, a pull out sofa in the living room, and a bathroom complete with a shower. The cabin accommodates a maximum of six individuals and has electricity, as well as hot and cold running water. There are pillows, blankets, and linens on the beds, but it is necessary for guests to bring their own bath and dish towels. The kitchen is equipped with an electric stovetop, oven, microwave, and refrigerator, as well as the various items listed on the inventory below. It’s always a good idea to have a flashlight with you! Pets are prohibited inside the cabin. For your safety and for the benefit of future guests, smoking is prohibited in or near the cabin. There is also a fire pit and picnic table outside the cabin. There is no cell service or Wi-Fi available at the cabin.

The Campground Cabin, located 8 miles south of Lake Placid at ADK’s Heart Lake Program Center, consists of a main living room (kitchen/dining area), one bunkroom, containing two sets of bunk beds and a bathroom complete with a shower. The cabin accommodates a maximum of four individuals and has electricity, as well as hot and cold running water.

There are pillows on the bunks, but it is necessary for guests to bring their own bedding, pillowcases, and bath and dish towels. The kitchen is equipped with a gas stovetop, oven, microwave, and a small refrigerator, as well as the various items listed on the inventory below. It’s always a good idea to have a flashlight with you! Pets are prohibited inside the cabin.

For your safety and for the benefit of future guests, smoking is prohibited in or near the cabin. There is also a fire pit and picnic table outside the cabin. There is no cell service or Wi-Fi at the cabin.

Guests checking into the Campground Cabin should go to the Front Desk at the Adirondak Loj to register and pick up the key.

  • Check-in is after 3:00 p.m. – Please check in at the Front Desk upon arrival.
  • Check-out is by 10:00 a.m.
  • Late Arrivals – The Front Desk is open 24 hours, please check in upon arrival.  
  • Reservations are held until 9 a.m. the day after the reserved day of arrival, if you do not arrive and have not contacted us, you are responsible for the entire cost of your reservation and the reservation will be forfeited at that time.
  • Quiet hours are from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
  • The Front Desk Night Manager is at the Front Desk all night and is available in case of an emergency or serious problem. If the Night Manager is not at the Front Desk, they are doing property rounds and will return within 20 minutes. 
  • Breakfast and Dinner are available at the Loj; please inquire with the Front Desk prior to your arrival for availability and reservations.
  • Canoe, Kayak, and Paddle Board rentals are available at the Front Desk. An adult must accompany children under 16 years old.
  • Methods of payment – Guests may pay their bills by cash, check, or credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, and American Express accepted).
  • Damages – ADK reserves the right to charge your credit card for any damages to ADK property or in cases of extreme uncleanliness.
  • Member rates – a 10% member discount is available to ADK members for food and lodging. Please have your membership card with you when checking in.
  • The High Peaks Information Center (HPIC), operated by ADK, is located at the Van Hoevenberg trailhead parking area. The building is open year-round; hours may vary during the off-season. The HPIC has a small retail shop with ski and snowshoe rentals, ADL logo items, snacks, books, maps, and assorted hiking gear. ADK staff are there to provide weather and trail information and to assist with questions.
  • NEVER SWIM ALONE. A minimum of two adults 18 years of age or older, must be present whenever this swimming facility is in use, with at least one adult on the beachfront.
  • THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR ADEQUATE SUPERVISION. Children under 16 years of age must be accompanied to the bathing facility by a parent or guardian, or similar adult responsible for their safety and behavior.
  • IN AN EMERGENCY, NOTIFY THE FACILITY OPERATOR AND CONTACT HELP IMMEDIATELY. A free telephone is provided at this facility. Telephone numbers for the nearest emergency medical service are posted.
  • Only use this facility during posted hours of operation and swim only in the designated bathing area. Don’t drink alcohol and swim. Injuries can be prevented and safety is everyone’s responsibility. If you notice any problems with the water quality or the absence of safety equipment, please notify the facility operator.

Directions

FROM THE NORTH OR SOUTH:

Take I-87 (the Northway) to Exit 30. Turn north on Rt. 73. Proceed to Keene Valley

FROM THE WEST:

Take Rt. 3 or 86 into Saranac Lake. Continue on Rt. 86 through Lake Placid. At the second traffic light, turn right on Rt. 73. Proceed to Keene Valley.

ONCE IN KEENE VALLEY:

Look for High Peaks Trailhead sign (next to Au Sable Inn). Turn onto Adirondack Street. At 0.6 miles the road turns right, crossing Johns Brook on a wooden bridge. Continue uphill following yellow trail markers and signs to the Garden parking area. Pavement ends as road approaches the Garden Parking area. The Garden Parking lot does fill up during busy seasons.

From the trail register, take yellow marked Phelps trail to Grace and O’Brien Camps (3.4 mi). This is the most direct route to the camps. The trail passes Bear Brook lean-to (0.9 mi) and Deer Brook lean-to (1.3 mi) before reaching the Ranger Station (3.0 mi; open May – Oct.). Continue on the yellow trail past the turn-off to the Ranger Station. Johns Brook Lodge is located on the north side of Johns Brook, about 0.4 miles upstream from the Ranger Station. Do not cross over the bridge; continue on the trail to Johns Brook Lodge.

PARKING: The Garden Parking Area is managed by the town of Keene and requires a cash fee (~$10/day) to park. The parking area fills up quickly on weekends/summer and early autumn, there may not be space when you arrive. Johns Brook Lodge

Welcome to the Adirondack Mountain Club! We hope that this information will answer any questions that you might have about your upcoming stay in the Johns Brook Lodge. This letter is also designed to let you know what to expect: a cozy and convenient base camp in the central High Peaks Region, and what not to expect: Showers, flush toilets, electricity, and blankets/linens. Johns Brook Lodge is a 3.5-mile hike from the Garden Parking lot in Keene Valley. The lodge accommodates 28 people in four bunkrooms. Two of the rooms sleep 10 people and two of the rooms sleep 4 people. Pillows are provided. Guests must bring sheets and blankets or sleeping bags and towels. Propane is used for all cooking and lighting. There is a woodstove in the living room. Coffee is provided.

JBL CARETAKER SEASON:

Caretaker service is available at JBL from Labor Day until late June. During Caretaker season, a caretaker is available to provide trail information and oversee the lodge. There is no crew to serve meals, however, the kitchen is available for guests to prepare the food that they pack in. The kitchen includes refrigerator space, pots, pans, dishes, and cutlery. The JBL kitchen is outfitted to prepare and serve 28 guests during full service. Guests are expected to do their own dishes and clean up after themselves. Guests should bring closed-toe cabin shoes.

Water – running water is available at JBL from mid-May until mid-October. From mid-October through mid-May there is no running water; during this time water must be collected from the brook. This will be a shared effort between guests, staff, and volunteers. Collected water must be filtered, chemically treated, or brought to a rolling boil for a minimum of 2 minutes before use (NYS Department of Health recommendation).

JBL WINTER MONTHS:

Meals should be kept simple as washing dishes provides an extra challenge during the winter months. Guests are expected to do their own dishes and clean up after themselves. This experience will be similar to winter camping with supplemental heat provided by the woodstove in the Great Room. Guests are strongly recommended to bring sleeping bags rated between 0 degrees and -20 degrees Fahrenheit. In addition to a warm sleeping bag guests should bring plenty of warm non-cotton layers and an extra pair of closed-toe inside shoes or warm slippers.

Trails in Winter Months – Snowshoes or skis are required by the DEC whenever there are 8 or more inches of snow. Microspikes or crampons should also be brought on all winter hikes. Summits: Temperatures will be colder, winds will be stronger, wind chill temperatures will be much lower, snow will be deeper, and ice will be present.

JBL FULL SERVICE:

The full-service season runs from the last weekend in June (call for exact date) until the Monday after Labor Day Weekend. All meals are included in the reservation rate beginning with dinner on the day of arrival and ending with a packed lunch on the day of departure.

  • Wake up bell is rung at the start of breakfast
  • Breakfast is served 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
  • Trail lunches are prepared in advance and available to take on the trail.
  • Dinner is available ONLY at one seating beginning at 6:30 p.m. Food is served family-style and there is rarely remaining food available to late-arriving guests.
  • Meals for those with dietary restrictions (gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan, and allergies) are available. To prepare them, we need to know at least 24 hours in advance. There must be real dietary restrictions and not preferences for picky eaters.

The kitchen and refrigerators are not available to guests during full service due to logistical reasons. The lodge does have a place to store food that doesn’t need to be refrigerated, so feel free to bring a few snacks.

INFORMATION PERTAINING TO BOTH JBL FULL SERVICE AND CARETAKER SEASON:

  • Check-in is after 3:00 p.m. – Please check in staff/Caretaker upon arrival.
  • Check-out is by 10:00 a.m.
  • Blankets are no longer offered. Please bring appropriate sleeping bags/linens.
  • Quiet hours are from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. After 10:00 p.m. we request that you use flashlights when entering the bunkrooms, so as not to disturb other guests.
  • Showers and toilets – There are two washrooms with vault toilets. However, there are no showers.
  • Guests must provide their own towels, sheets, and sleeping bags. However, pillows and mattresses are available at JBL.
  • Pets are not allowed in JBL and are not to be tied outside the lodge.
  • Smoking is not permitted in JBL.
  • GUESTS MUST REMOVE THEIR OWN GARBAGE and leftover food. (A fee of $50-100 will be charged to guests that do not hike their garbage out with them.)
  • IF YOU CARRY IT IN, PLEASE CARRY IT OUT, including all of your trash.
  • Children under 12 years old are half price. Children under 2 years old are free.
  • Payment in full is due at least 30 days prior to arrival through the Adirondak Loj.
  • Methods of payment – Guests may pay their bills by cash, check, or credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are accepted).
  • Damages/Housekeeping Fees – ADK reserves the right to charge the credit card on file with your reservation for any damages to ADK property or extreme uncleanliness.

  • The JBL Store is located in the lodge and carries some last-minute basic necessities, novelties, and ADK merchandise. Please bring cash if you wish to purchase items in the store.

Camp Peggy O’Brien

  • Propane gas – propane fuels the lights and countertop cooking units. When you arrive staff will have turned on the gas and lit the heater. If the heat, stove or lights do not function properly please let a staff member at Johns Brook Lodge know and they will assist.
  • Lights – Please exercise care in lighting the propane lights. The on/off valve is the ONLY moving part that you need to touch (other moving parts include a globe release which will send the $10.00 globe crashing to the floor). The on/off valve resembles an Allen Wrench and is located on the side of the unit.

To light: 1) push & turn on/off valve 90 degrees.

2) Hold match between top of the globe and small metal cap. To extinguish, return valve to original position.

  • Heater – Camp Peggy O’Brien is equipped with a propane heater. Do not heat the building higher than 70 degrees. Please lower the thermostat when leaving during the day.
  • Cooktop – Camp Peggy O’Brien is equipped with a propane cooktop. Please exercise caution when lighting. Push knob in and turn and light with match. 
  • Water is available at a spigot outside Johns Brook Lodge from Memorial Day Weekend through Columbus Day Weekend. Otherwise, water should be filtered, chemically treated, or brought to a rolling boil for a minimum of 2 minutes (NYS Health Department recommendation).
  • Carry it in, Carry it out – a set inventory has been established at the camps.  To maintain the inventory and eliminate the accumulation of unwanted stuff, it is imperative that you carry out everything that was carried in.  Please resist the temptation to leave excess food and other items behind for “someone else.”  What seems like a nice gesture is, in fact, an unmanageable problem for us. Help us by removing all items not listed as part of the established inventory.
  • Vault Privy – Toilet paper is not provided. Both Camps are utilizing a vault privy system.  Sewage is collected in 55-gallon drums and flown by helicopter annually to a conventional treatment facility.  DO NOT THROW GARBAGE IN THE DRUMS – it is expensive to fly out and inhibits the treatment process. 
  • Tents and other temporary structures are not allowed at the camps.
  • Fires and open flames are not allowed in the buildings or on the surrounding grounds.
  • Meals are not available at Johns Brook Lodge.
  • Emergency Help – From Memorial Day to Columbus Day help is available to Johns Brook Lodge and the Ranger Station.  From Columbus Day to Memorial Day help is available at the warming hut next to Johns Brook Lodge. Johns Brook Lean-tos

Welcome to the Adirondack Mountain Club!  We hope that this information will answer any questions that you might have about your upcoming stay at the Johns Brook Lodge (JBL) lean-tos.  There are three lean-tos at JBL (Crandall, Myers, and Goodwin) and they accommodate a maximum of six people each.  The lean-tos are available for reservations year-round.

  • Late Arrivals should check in at JBL before 9:00 a.m. the morning after the initial arrival date to let staff know you have arrived. 
  • An ADK Staff Member is on property at all times and is available in case of an emergency or serious problem.  To locate the staff person, go to JLB or the warming hut. 
  • Radios and Bluetooth speakers are prohibited in the lean-tos.  Please respect the rights of others to a wilderness experience.
  • Trash – If you carried it in, carry it out.  Please clean your site before you leave.
  • Bears and other woodland animals frequent this area.  Properly store your food.  A bear canister is mandatory (three bear canisters per lean-to are available at Johns Brook Lodge).  We are unable to accommodate food storage, use of the kitchen, or bathroom usage at Johns Brook Lodge.
  • Water is available at a spigot outside Johns Brook Lodge from Memorial Day Weekend through Columbus Day Weekend.  Otherwise, water should be filtered, chemically treated, or brought to a rolling boil for a minimum of 2 minutes (NYS Department of Health recommendation).
  • Pets are permitted, provided they are on a leash and are not disturbing others.
  • Meals are not available at Johns Brook Lodge.

  • Tents are not allowed on lean-to sites unless it is a freestanding tent (no stakes) and it is set up inside the lean-to.
