Description The Ring of Kerry is probably Ireland’s most famous attraction as it boasts one of the most panoramic roads in the world with 170kms of jaw-dropping beauty. In truth, it is the Iveragh Peninsula the largest of the five peninsulas that “jut” out into the Atlantic Ocean in the most south westerly corner of Ireland. This unique landscape is captivating, and the heritage town of Kenmare offers a stunning start to our adventure.  Our hikes will vary in terrain but always offering gorgeous scenery each day as we carry a light pack during our hikes.  We are rewarded with comfortable accommodations, wonderful food and all things that influence Ireland.  Join us for: Hiking the Beara & Sheeps Head Peninsulas in and the glorious region of West Cork.

Payment Policy
  • Must have at least 14 registered  by November 01, 2019 for the trip to go.
  • A Deposit of $ _900.00_ is due with the application forms to register for the trip.
  • The Balance of $1,682.00 is due no later than January 01, 2020.
Cancellation Policy
  • If registrant cancels on or prior to January 01, 2020, all payments received by ADK minus $100.00 will be refunded.
  • After January 01, 2020, a refund will only be made if the vacancy can be filled from a waiting list maintained by the leader, if any, and then all but $100.00 will be refunded.
  • Note that there is a $100 registration fee included in the trip deposit which is not refundable if you have to cancel for any reason whatsoever.
  • If the leader decides that this trip is not for you, or the trip is canceled by ADK, all payments received by ADK will be refunded.
Trip Insurance It is very strongly recommended that all participants have trip or travel insurance that will cover trip cancellation by the participant, travel delays, medical expenses and medical evacuation. ADK does not provide this insurance and does not cover medical expenses or evacuation in the event you are injured or become ill during the trip. Note that if you have to cancel after the date indicated above, and cannot be replaced from the leader’s waiting list, if any; you could be out the entire amount you paid for the trip. NOTE:  Medicare does not cover expenses outside the USA and its territories, and evacuation from a remote location can be astronomically expensive, especially if by helicopter.
Daily Itinerary Day 1, Saturday, April 18:
We will meet at Shannon airport by the car rental area between 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM and will be transferred one hour by private transportation to the town of Killareny to start our adventure.   Killarney has been a favorite for visitors to Ireland since the 1900s due to its proximity to Killarney National Park and the stunning beauty of the surrounding countryside. It is a hiker’s heaven with the country’s highest mountain range always in view and glistening lakes only minutes’ walk from the town center.

Day 2, Sunday, April 19:
From Killarney, we will be hiking through the National Park, enjoying some of the magnificent oak woods that Killarney is so famous for. From here, we will follow a fabulous trail known as “The Old Kenmare Road” through Esknamucky Glen to the heritage town of Kenmare. This is a glorious walk, and we will have the opportunity to see some of Ireland’s native red deer during our hike in this National Park.  Distance: 10 miles round trip with elevation gain of 900 feet.

Day 3, Monday April 20:
We will take a ferry to the amazing UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Skellig Islands is one of the world’s most unique places to visit. This is an impressive 6th Century Monastic Settlement in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean which still looks almost the same as when the monks left it approx 1,200 years ago. Depending on weather we may hike in the same region Distance, duration and elevation to be determined.

Day 4, Tuesday, April 21:  Today is a free day from morning till early afternoon for relaxing and shopping.  We will move to Castletownbere in the midafternoon.  No scheduled hike is offered.

Day 5, Wednesday, April 22: We will take the ferry for Bere Island. Once a military stronghold – this glorious island offers both history, magnificent scenery & fascinating stories from the past. Walking around the western end of the island, which has a lighthouse that has guided boats into the haven of Castletown ere harbor for many years. From here, we follow across moorland to reach an old signal tower, the hike will take us to the eastern end of the island with wonderful coastal scenery.  We will visit the tiny village of Rerrin where we will board the ferry after exploring the shops and culture.  Distance: 12 miles round trip with elevation gain of 800 feet.

Day 6, Thursday, April 23: Today will take us to the very western tip of the Beara Peninsula and the delightful Dursey Island. Crossing over by Ireland’s only Cable Car, where we will explore the center of the hills that make Dursey the island it is.  We will hike/walk cross country toward the Signal Tower and hike back to the cable car.  Distance: 9.5 miles round trip with elevation gain of 800 feet.

Day 7, Friday April 24: Leaving Castletownbere after breakfast, we drive east to arrive at the market town of Bantry. A short drive outside the town brings us to the start of our walk.  We will have a choice of walking along hillside Sheeps Head Peninsula with the Wild Atlantic lapping at both the northern & southern shores of the peninsula. Following a long hike along the central hills of the Sheeps Head Peninsula we continue west with wonderful views south over Mizen Head, north over the Beara Peninsula and Ring of Kerry and west towards the Fastnet Rock and the islands of West Cork. Continue west to reach “Finn McCools Chair” & from here, we descend to reach a small road and will explore the town of Bantry which will be our home for our final overnight and a farewell party to celebrate our week discovering this magnificent region of Ireland.  Distance: 8 miles round trip with elevation gain of 800 feet.

Day 8, Saturday, April 25: After breakfast our transportation will leave the hotel at 8:00 AM for Shannon airport.  Please do not schedule your return flight prior to 11:00 AM local time.

Notes TRAVEL ITINERARIES/FLIGHT RESERVATIONS:  Do not make your travel plans or flight arrangements to and from Shannon Airport in Ireland until Trip Leader advises the trip has the minimum participants for the trip to go.

TIME DIFFERENCE: Ireland is on GMT time zone in Europe.  Please review time zone difference according to your location.

PASSPORT: A valid passport that has at least 6 months validity remaining from the date of your return.

VISA’S: Not required.

IMMUNIZATIONS: Not required.

EMERGENCIES: Leave your itinerary with your emergency contact.  Please consider buying an international cell service plan.

WEATHER: The weather and temperature variance are present on the hikes, so we need to be prepared for all conditions. (rain, fog, wind and sun)

WI-FI AND CELL SERVICE: Wi-Fi is available at all accommodations and cell service should be available in most areas.  The quality of the signal varies from place to place.

CURRENCY: Euros.

ATM’s:  There are banks available in most cities and credit/Debit cards and other electronic modes of payment such as “Apple Pay,” are not accepted by all local merchants and some restaurants. It’s always good to have some cash.

ELECTRICITY: In Ireland the standard voltage is 230 Volt and the frequency is 50 Hz. Universal Power Adapter/converter is highly recommended.

TRANSPORTATION:  Included in the form of minibus to accommodate all participants and it is for group use only.

TRIP PRICES/ARRANGEMENTS: Subject to change due to circumstances beyond ADK’s and Trip Leader’s control.

ACCOMMODATIONS:Our accommodations while hiking will be in smaller local lodging with single and double occupancy in suite rooms.  Websites are listed on the itinerary and are subject to change if necessary.

Then, if you decide to join this adventure, please contact me (email, telephone or USPS mail) and I will send you the registration forms, consisting of the Registration form, the Health form, and the Release of Liability form, Complete these forms and send them to me by United States Postal Service with the deposit (check payable to ADK or the Credit Card Authorization) to reserve a spot. Please note that original signatures are required on all forms. Trip spaces are reserved in the order that complete and acceptable registration forms and deposit payments are received, so do not delay.
