Description The Bregaglia is a deep, narrow, unspoiled valley to the west of St Moritz in Switzerland. We will stay at a Swiss family hotel, the Stua Grande, located in Soglio, one of the most beautiful villages in the Alps. Soglio means threshold in Italian, the language of the Bregaglia, and the village stands on a sunny bench facing the great mountain wall of the north faces of the Piz Badile, the Cengalo, Sciora and Bernina.  An Italian poet described Soglio as “the threshold of paradise.” Participants should be experienced hikers in mountain terrain.  We will have access to hikes of every level of difficulty, hiking straight out of the hotel or using the Swiss post bus system which runs frequently up and down the valley from St Moritz to Chiavenna.    Easy, moderate and difficult hikes abound out of Soglio and in the valley. For rainy or rest days there are some interesting cultural sights to visit. Soglio village is at the altitude of 3500 feet and our highest hikes may reach 10,000 feet. Weather is typically sunny and warm and stable in September but rain and storm and even snow and sleet are possible especially at the higher elevations.  In the evening, a gathering place for our group after our hikes will likely be the 18th century Baroque garden and outdoor café of the Palazzo Solis in Soglio, just around the corner from our hotel.

After February 1, 2018, your payment is not refundable unless it is possible to fill your place with another participant. You would then receive all but $100.  If the trip does not take place, full refund including the $100.

Because the price of the trip is not refundable after the final payment, the ADK strongly recommends trip cancellation insurance.

Accommodations and Meals Double occupancy, half pension. Half pension means lodging, breakfasts and dinners are included. For trail lunches, there is a grocery store next door to the hotel. (Note that Soglio does not have an ATM machine and the nearest ones are in Vicosoprano and Chiavenna.)
Trip Insurance Before you can go on the trip, you must send the leader a proof of rescue insurance which covers rescue costs, hospitalization and repatriation. Why is this necessary?  The Swiss Rescue services now require a payment of 5000 Swiss Francs, cash or charge before they allow you in the helicopter. Most American insurance plans do not cover foreign rescue, hospital care or repatriation. ADK does not provide this insurance and does not cover medical expenses or evacuation in the event  you are injured or become ill during the trip.  There are numerous internet sites comparing various insurance plans which you may wish to consult.  Each year, the leader signs up for the Austrian Alpine Club. UK Section. For about seventy dollars, this provides worldwide, year- long rescue and repatriation insurance. The ADK also strongly recommends trip interruption and cancellation insurance which would reimburse an unexpected cancellation.
