Looking for ways to get your kids outside this summer? Here are a few ways that you and your young adventurers can get out in the Adirondacks, both with ADK (Adirondack Mountain Club) and other local organizations.

Heart Lake Naturalist Programs

Starting at the end of June and running through August, our summer naturalist interns will be leading a variety of weekly programs that are great for the whole family. Taking place at our Heart Lake Program Center near Lake Placid, these include daily nature walks, guided hikes up Mt. Jo, and an interactive nature museum. The naturalists are currently still in training, but will be releasing a program schedule by mid to late June. Stay tuned for more details!

The Fire Tower Challenge

Choosing hikes that are comfortable for children is key to having a good time. Our Fire Tower guide book, Views from on High, features a variety of fire tower hikes that range from easy to very difficult. Depending on what your hiking buddy prefers, you can pick a hike that not only meets their level but also offers fantastic views at the top. Our personal favorites are Belfry, Arab, Stillwater, and Kane. For older kids, you can also consider Spruce, Cathedral Rock, and Goodnow.

ADK Chapter Outings

If you are an ADK member and are associated with a local chapter, check out what events they offer. You can see what family-friendly events they have by going to ADK.org/calendar and using the “Special Focus” buttons on the left to highlight activity types.

Knee High Naturalist Programs

If you are near Moreau Lake State Park in Gansevoort, NY, they offer naturalist programs for kids ages 1-6 (must be accompanied by an adult guardian) that require advance registration. See their Facebook events page for more details.
