Description This trip will be similar to the 2016 ADK trip but during autumn and further south in the Ashville area. Mid-October is the middle of leaf season in this area and views should be spectacular.

Asheville will be near our accommodations on the French Broad River in the Blue Ridge Mountains. We will be hiking some of North Carolina’s spectacular terrain including the Linville Gorge Wilderness area, Mt Mitchell (highest mountain in the Eastern US), Shining Rock Wilderness, Mt Pisgah, part of the AT and other venues.

The trip is planned with strenuous days alternating with easier days, but the options in the itinerary allow for longer strenuous or easier hikes almost every day. This trip will have flexible hiking options from 5.2 to 14 miles.

Average October temperatures: high 65-75, low about 40-50 degrees. (Good hiking weather)

Although flexible, participants must be able to hike at least 6 miles at an elevation of 6000 feet with 1000’ elevation gain

Payment Policy A deposit of $400 is due at the time of registration. The remaining balance of $550 is due no later than May 1, 2017.
Cancellation Policy If you need to cancel the trip at any time, the $100 ADK registration is non-refundable. The balance of the registration is fully refundable up to May 1, 2017. After May 1, 2017, no refunds are possible unless your space can be filled from a waiting list.
Accommodations and Meals We will be staying in a 6 bedroom 4000sq’ house. Rooms will be a mix of kings, queen, doubles, and twins. If you are a single and desire a specific roommate, let me know, otherwise a roommate will be assigned. We will prepare our own breakfasts and trail lunches in the kitchen. Everyone will be expected to help in preparation and clean up. This is a non-smoking facility. 4 bathrooms. Hot tub. Internet. Laundry. Balcony, deck, patio and much more. A complete list of this facility will be sent to participants

Trip Insurance It is very strongly recommended that all participants have trip or travel insurance that will cover trip cancellation by the participant, travel delays, medical expenses and medical evacuation. ADK does not provide this insurance and does not cover medical expenses or evacuation in the event you are injured or become ill during the trip. Note that if you have to cancel after the date indicated above, and cannot be replaced from the leader’s waiting list (if any) you could be out the entire amount you paid for the trip.
Daily Itinerary

Day 1: Sunday, October 15, 2017

Arrive after 4pm. If you are driving, I will send you meeting instructions. If you are flying, we can meet you at the Asheville Airport Sunday morning. Dinner will be at our lodging.

Day 2: Monday, October 16, 2017

Breakfast at the house each day, preparation and clean up by 2 trip participants. Multiple options-toast, bagels, eggs, pancakes, fruit, etc. We will make and pack trail lunches following breakfast. No later than 8:30 am, we will travel by van to the parking area for Mt Pisgah (5721’), a 5.2 mile hike to the summit with an observation platform (750’ elevation gain). Following lunch, we will travel by van to the NC Arboretum where we can stroll or hike the 10 miles of trails. http://www.ncarboretum.org/ longer option: hike part of the Shut-in Trail from the Arboretum ascending or Mt Pisgah area and descending. The Shut-in Trail was Vanderbilt’s road between the Biltmore estate and his summer home on Mt Pisgah. Dinner will be on your own at a restaurant of your choice in Asheville (transportation, rental van for each dinner).

Day 3: Tuesday, October 17, 2017

After breakfast, we will pack trail lunches at the house (various sandwiches, cookies, chips, fruit, etc.) We will board the van and travel to Mt Mitchell, the highest mountain in the eastern US. http://www.ncparks.gov/mount-mitchell-state-park Today’s hike will be approximately 8 miles and will be a loop and an out-and-back to Mt Craig (2nd highest in the east at 6647’), Big Tom (6581’) and Balsam Cone (6611”). Hiking options can be 4-14 miles and up to 3700’ elevation gain.

Day 4: Wednesday, October 18, 2017

Breakfast and lunch (see Monday and Tuesday). Today we will head off to Dupont State Forest, home of filming of the Hunger Games. This 9 mile hike will pass Triple Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, High Falls, and Hooker Falls. https://www.romanticasheville.com/dupont_waterfall_hike.htm

Day 5: Thursday, October 19, 2017

Breakfast and lunch (see Monday and Tuesday). Today we’ll take the van up to the AT and hike 8-9 miles from Allen Gap to Tanyard Gap. We will climb the Rich Mountain fire tower for views of the surrounding mountains. (Elevation start and finish is about 2250’, high point on this section is 3643’). Longer option: continue on the trail and drop 2200’ from Rich Mountain to the French Broad River over Lovers Leap (600’ view over the river) for a 14 mile day. (Options include 4.2 mile loop to Lovers Leap) The exact hike on the AT will depend on participant’s needs, wants and abilities.

Day 6: Friday, October 20, 2017

hike all the trails in the Recreation Area, about 4-5 miles roundtrip, easy to moderate. After lunch, we’ll drive to the Hawksbill parking area and hike to the top of this peak to see the entire Linville Wilderness Area. 1.5 miles (RT), moderately strenuous, 700’ elevation gain. Longer option: continue on the trail to Devil’s Hole Trailhead.

Day 7: Saturday, October 21, 2017

Breakfast and lunch (see Monday and Tuesday). Today we will drive to the Shining Rock Wilderness area and hike a strenuous 8.4 mile loop over Old Butt Knob and Shining Rock. This loop will be steep in places. We will see Cold Mountain scene of the book and movie of the same name. We will need to leave as early as possible due to the strenuous nature of this hike.
