Snow and Ice: Snow and ice are present throughout the High Peaks and surrounding areas. Higher elevations of snow depths of up to 3 feet and ice is present on summits and other open areas.  Pack snowshoes or skis and crampons and use them as warranted. 

*Forecasts provided by the National Weather Service are based on conditions at low elevations. Hikers and campers in the High Peaks should be prepared for more severe conditions. Check up-to-date forecasts before entering the backcountry.

Mountain weather can change rapidly and unexpectedly. Temperatures can drop 40 degrees Fahrenheit in a few hours, and a sudden warm front can bring rain or a thunderstorm. The temperature drops 3-5 degrees F (2-3 degrees C) for evey 1000 feet (305 meters) of elevation gain.

Never ascend above the treeline when there is lightning. If you are already above the treeline, descend immediately.
