Position Title: Campground Host

Job Description: The Campground Host program provides an important volunteer opportunity that is meant for you to have fun while assisting in ADK's efforts to provide a quality and safe camping environment.

Reports to: North Country Administrative Manager

Volunteer Tasks/Duties:

As a Campground Host you will greet campers upon their arrival, be accessible to assist the campers, explain the compground rules, and assist the ADK staff where needed. In return you will recieve a free campsite for up to two people, three meals a day, free use of specific ADK facilities when available, and a 25% discount on items sold at the High Peaks Information Center store during your stay as Campground Host.

Qualifications:

A Campground Host is an ADK member who is an on-site representative of the Adirondack Mountain Club and has an enthusiasm and love for the outdoor environment. Campground Hosts are selcted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Some of the criteria are: camping experience, public contact experience, available time, at least 21 years of age, and favorable health conditions that allow you to carry out the responsibilities.

Time Commitment:
As available with weekends as top priority of need.

Position Title: Volunteer High Peaks Information Center (HPIC)/Parking Assistant

Job Description: The Volunteer HPIC/Parking Assistant is responsible for assisting the HPIC Manager and Assistant in daily operation of the HPIC/Parking facility.
Reports to: HPIC Manager

Volunteer Tasks/Duties:
•  Assist in providing information on trails in the High Peaks, backcountry preparedness, and ADK.
•  Help operate small retail store: restock shelves, operate cash register, maintain orderliness, be familiar with merchandise, and assist people in choosing gear.
•  Assist with fitting and rentals of gear and procurement and sales of firewood.
•  Staff the parking booth as required, to accurately collect parking receipts, provide backcountry information and provide directions to guests.
•  Provide a friendly welcoming first impression for ADK to guests.
•  Assist in traffic control and direct parking process in lots as needed.
•  Maintain general neatness and cleanliness of HPIC and parking booth.
•  Assist with trash and recycling removal from HPIC and parking booth.
•  Assist with cleaning of restrooms, showers, buildings, and grounds.
•  Assist with inventory counting at end of every month.
•  Promote ADK's goals of conservation, education, and recreation.
•  Supplemental duties/responsibilities to support other club operations or functions as requested.

Qualifications:
•  Excellent communication skills for interacting with the general public and staff.
•  Patience and ability to work in busy environment while maintaining friendly and helpful demeanor.

Position Title: Volunteer Summer Naturalist

Reports to: Community Outreach Coordinator

Volunteer Tasks/Duties :
The Volunteer Summer Naturalist works with the Education program to promote responsible recreation, environmental literacy, and an ethic of stewardship. As a volunteer for the Adirondack Mountain Club, you are an important part of our mission to promote responsible recreation and stewardship of the NewYork State Forest Preserve. As a Volunteer Naturalist, you work and interact   directly with the public, answering questions, sharing the beauty of the Heart lake and surrounding High Peaks Region; as well as providing information about the Adirondack Park. As a volunteer, you have the opportunity to meet people from all over the world and make a true difference in the future of the Adirondacks.

Responsibilities:
•  Staff and maintain the Nature Museum.
•  Greet visitors and answer questions regarding the Nature Museum, natural history, hiking trails, and the Adirondack Mountain Club.
•  Assist interns with displays and exhibits in the nature museum as needed.
•  Keep accurate records of the number of visitors to the Nature Museum and encourage visitors to write comments in the Guest Sign-In book.           
•  Professionally represent the Adirondack Mountain Club in all aspects of your work.
•  Encourage responsible recreation and stewardship of the Heart lake Property and the Adirondack Forest Preserve.

Time commitment:
•  Nature Museum Hours: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily from July - September       

 

Position Title: Volunteer Front Desk Assistant

Job Description: The Volunteer Front Desk Assistant helps in creating a friendly and welcoming atmosphere and first impression, whether over the phone or in person.   They also assist front desk staff with routine duties to enhance guest services.
Reports to: Front Desk Supervisor

Volunteer Tasks/Duties:  
•  Encourage a friendly, welcoming atmosphere at the Adirondak Loj.
•  Ensure smooth and efficient operation of the front desk and Loj, with particular attention to guest services such as maintenance of hot drink station, showing guests to their rooms, providing informal tours of facilities, and assisting with canoe rentals and firewood.
•  Assist in maintaining and filing accurate, up-to-date, legible records of occupancy, meal counts, reservations, cancellations, deposits, guest receipts, etc.
•  Assist in accurately inputting data into computerized reservation system as training allows.
•  Promote ADK membership as part of a larger effort to support the goals and objectives of the Adirondack Mountain Club.
•  Provide reliable, objective backcountry and miscellaneous information to the public or direct them to other sources.
•  Help process incoming and outgoing mail effectively and efficiently.
•  Supplemental duties/responsibilities to support other Club operations/functions as requested.

Qualifications:
•  Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work with a wide variety of guests, members and staff.
•  Experience in lodge/bed and breakfast field and customer service with an emphasis on telephone skills.
•  Ability to operate a computer (reservation system)
•  Ability to thrive in a busy and stressful work environment.
•  Detail oriented person.
•  Physical ability to go up and down stairs, clear speaking voice.
•  Understanding of and interest in the mission and goals of the Adirondack Mountain Club.

Position Title: Volunteer Maintenance Assistant

Job Description: The Volunteer Maintenance Assistant works with both the Maintenance Manager and the Maintenance Assistant performing routine maintenance and grounds keeping tasks as well as assisting with maintenance related projects.
Reports to: Maintenance Manager

Volunteer Tasks/Duties:  
•  Complete daily routine duties/upkeep to ensure that the JBL and Heart Lake Properties are both presentable and running smoothly.
•  Communicate with the Maintenance Manager and Maintenance Assistant as to items needing attention and status of responsibilities/tasks.
•  Assist in facilitating the recycling program at Heart Lake Property.
•  Check, restock, and assist in procurement of firewood supplies.
•  Check general cleanliness of buildings and grounds.
•  Clean the campground wash house when necessary.
•  Clean and maintain the campground composting toilet.
•  Grounds Check:   Patrol for litter, fresh cut, or green wood, extra picnic tables at the sites, and other problems or potential problems property wide.
•  Help the Maintenance Assistant with the weekly and monthly routine maintenance checks and tasks performed at the ADK properties.
•  Perform general grounds keeping, including mowing, trimming, and turf management.
•  Help maintain tools and equipment in optimal working condition.
•  Assist with light carpentry, construction, plumbing, and electrical projects as needs and abilities dictate.

Qualifications:
•  Experience in maintenance, grounds keeping, or construction helpful.
•  Effective verbal communication skills.
•  Willingness and ability to perform sometimes physically demanding jobs.
•  Physically able to carry loads over uneven backcountry terrain.
