Trailhead Parking

Parking at trailheads in the Forest Preserve is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please obey local parking laws and use good sense when trying to find a place at a crowded trailhead. There is a fee to park at Heart Lake (Adirondak Loj) and the Garden (Johns Brook Lodge trailhead), but there is no fee at other trailheads in the High Peaks. Be aware that parking lots at major trailheads fill quickly in summer. The Heart Lake lot is usually full by 9 or 10 AM on summer weekends and earlier on holidays, while The Garden usually reaches capacity late Friday or early Saturday all weekends from early May through late October.

Canadian money is accepted and the fee is based on the current exchange rate. From May through October, a parking attendant is present 8 AM-5 PM. In the off-season the parking booth is manned Friday afternoons and 8 AM-5 PM on weekends. If the parking booth is closed, please pay and get a permit at the self-service box on the side of the booth.

When the lot fills, free overflow parking is available a mile back down the Adirondack Loj Road on Meadows Lane (South Meadows Campground Area) and in the small lot at its end. Limit parking here to one side of the road to allow DEC emergency vehicle access to the Marcy Dam truck trail. (The 2.6-mile dirt road offers an alternative hiking route to the Dam.)

Parking at The Garden (operated by the town of Keene) costs $5 per day

($6 CA) from May 19 through the third week of October. An attendant is on duty 1 PM-7 PM Fridays and 7 AM-7 PM Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Town employees and DEC rangers monitor the lot during the week.

When the lot is full, free overflow parking is available at Marcy Airfield 2.5 miles north of Keene Valley. There is a $3 ($4 CA) round-trip charge to ride the shuttle the 3.5 miles to the Garden trailhead. The shuttle operates from 7 AM -7 PM on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from June 28 through October 28. The shuttle runs every half hour on the hour.
