Shelving Rock Falls - A Trail to a Fine Falls on your way to a Beautiful Lake Shore

The shortest trail to the falls starts where the stream to the falls crosses the Shelving Rock Road a second time as it descends to the Shelving Rock day use area. There is parking for a couple of cars on the left just before the road swoops down to cross the bridge. The unmarked trail is broad and generally flat except where it crosses a short rock section near the road. One needs to step only a short distance off the trail to get a view of the top of the falls. To get the the bottom of the falls where this picture was taken, one must search around for a safe way to decend to a set of somewhat treacherous herd paths which finally lead back to the base of the falls. The safest way to these paths comes quite a ways on down the main trail as it proceeds toward the lake shore.

After you visit the falls, you should walk on down to the lake shore and follow the trails down there to a number of beautiful vantage points. Lake George in this area is one of New York's greatest lakes, so be sure to take advantage of your visit to the area.

You can return the way you came, or take a number of trails back to the road and walk back up the road to your car.

NOTE: For a more complete description of the trail, please see ADK's GUIDE to ADIRONDACK TRAILS - Eastern Region, pp 146-150.

Have a great hike!
