Moose Pond--A Short Hike to a Lovely Pond
On Wednesday August 25th, my wife and I hiked a little-known trail called Moose Pond. This trail is located 2.2 miles west of the four corners in Bloomingdale (or about 3.5 miles north of the Route 3-Route 86 intersection in Saranac Lake). Parking can be a problem here as you might have to park on the side of the road on Route 3, so be careful getting in and out.
The trail starts from Route 3 and decends down a rough road and across a foot bridge to the trail register. We signed in as always and began the best 1.5 mile hike of the season.
The trail was clean of debris and even widened enough at spots to walk side by side. The trail, while a short one, was just like walking in your own back yard when you were little.
We arrived at Moose pond within 20 minutes and were not disappointed with what we saw. A beautiful pond with mountains in the background gave my camera all it could handle.
Sitting on the rocky bluff we had a snack and enjoyed the quiet and peacefulness of the area. It was as if it was all ours. After the snack and a little R & R, we headed back and arrived back at the trailhead in the same 20 minutes that it took to get there.
Sometimes less is better and this trail was just that. Take the time to visit this remote and not-heavily traveled area and come out thinking that you just might come back once more for that much needed quiet time.
NOTE: For a more complete description of the trail, please see ADK's (guide to) ADIRONDACK TRAILS - High Peaks Region 13th Edition, pp 161.
Respectfully,
Rick and Tammy McCorry
