Trailless Peak Backpacking
These trips are designed for those who have experience hiking and backpacking and who are looking for guided backcountry experience in pursuit of climbing “trailless” High Peaks. The group will hike into a base camp from which they’ll be guided up the peaks. This course will be a cooperative group camping experience led by a NYS licensed guide with the shared responsibility of camp chores, cooking, and decision-making. As with any course, learning new skills will be our primary focus, and although every effort will be made to do so, there are no guarantees of reaching summits. Weather, safety, and group ability will be determining factors. Due to the physically strenuous nature of these hikes, participants should have prior hiking experience, be in good physical condition and prepared to hike (in some cases) up to 12 hours per day. A quick hiking pace will be required in order to reach our destinations each day. The terrain encountered is typical of the High Peaks region, so be prepared for anything from rocks and roots, to mud, blow-down, stream crossings, steep slopes, rock slabs and slides, and so on. For more complete descriptions of specific hikes, consult a High Peaks Region Guidebook (available at www.adk.org/new_store). All backpacking trips are field based, except Cliff & Redfield Mts. and Allen Mtn., which are based out of the Heart Lake Program Center.
Cost: $150/$165; includes instruction, meals, and use of group gear.
