Heart Lake Happenings
There's always plenty to explore, experience, and learn at the Heart Lake Program Center. For information, call the Adirondak Loj at 518-523-3441 or 518-523-3480. Unless otherwise noted, all programs are free.
Winter programs run Jan. 1-March 21.
Friday Night Campfire
Every Friday at 8 PM starting Jan. 1
Toasty campfires take place at a lean-to adjacent to Heart Lake. Hot chocolate, tea, and coffee will be served for all. Then you can listen to the myths about the stars and constellations while Heart Lake booms and the trees pop. Participants will also have the chance to walk out on the frozen lake and view planets and stars through a telescope under dark Adirondack skies.
Tracking on Snowshoes at Heart Lake
Every Saturday at 1 PM
Join us for a free naturalist led snowshoe in the woods of the Heart Lake Program Center. We’ll look for signs of animal life in the snow and you’ll learn other facets of winter life in the woods, such as why trees don’t freeze to death in winter. Appropriate for all ages.
Saturday Night Lectures
Every Saturday at 8 PM
Lectures and musical performances will be held throughout the winter.
February Vacation Week Activities
Feb. 15-19
- Discover Mt. Jo Snowshoe Hike, 1 PM, Wednesday, Feb. 17. This hike is a fun learning experience for all ages. We’ll snowshoe up Mount Jo while learning about how trees and animals adapt to the winter conditions of the High Peaks. The view from the top is not to be missed.
- Campfire-Astronomy Program, 8 PM, Wednesday Feb. 17. A special midweek edition of our campfires on Heart Lake. Enjoy a warm fire alongside frozen Heart Lake. You’ll have the chance, weather permitting, to check out the night sky through a telescope on the lake and hear stories of the night sky.
- Winter Animal Tracking, 1 PM, Thursday, Feb. 18. Bring the family out to the woods around Heart Lake and Mount Jo to look for signs of wildlife that passed through during the night. The basics of tracking and track identification will be covered.
Guided Mt. Jo Snowshoe Hikes
Every Sunday at 9 AM
Join this snowshoe hike up Mt. Jo to see the High Peaks from the fabulous summit ledge. A naturalist will show participants the lay of the land from the top and help in identification of animal tracks on the way up.
Winter Visitors
Jan. 18, Feb. 15
Join us for winter birding trips to the open farmlands of the Champlain Valley and the waters of Lake Champlain in search of horned grebes, goldeneyes, buffleheads, rough legged hawks, Bonaparte and Iceland gulls, snow buntings, horned Larks, Bohemian waxwings, and many more species. Details here.
