Map & Compass Fundamentals    

This course offers an introduction to the fundamentals of map reading, identification of terrain features, compass use, and triangulation.  Once learned, these skills will enable participants to feel more confident with backcountry travel. 

Location: Heart Lake Program Center

Cost: $65/$72, includes instruction and use of materials.

May 16-17

Wildflower Weekend w/ Ruth Schottman 

Intended for beginner wildflower enthusiasts, or those who are looking for a review, this workshop will familiarize participants with Adirondack wildflowers. Led by renowned expert Ruth Schottman, author of Trailside Notes, we will study botanical structures, relationships among plants and various environmental factors as well as identification and use of field guides.

Location: Heart Lake Program Center

Cost: $70/$77, includes instruction and use of equipment.

Wild Teas of the Adirondacks

4:30 till 8:30 with an hour for dinner

Owner of Underwood Herbs, Jane Desotelle, started her business collecting wild herb teas from the Adirondack region over 30 years ago. Learn the basics of collecting, preserving, and making herbal teas.

Location: Heart Lake Program Center

Cost: $40/$45, includes instruction and delicious hearty home cooked dinner.

Guide License Training      

This three-day course is designed to help outdoor educators and leaders obtain a New York State Guides License. All certification courses needed for the guide license are included, plus additional workshops to prepare you for the guide license exam and hone your skills in leading others in the backcountry.

Location: Heart Lake Program Center

Cost: $175/190, includes instruction, NYSOGA presentation, and CPR, First-Aid, and Basic Water Safety certifications.
