June 6
American Canoe Association (ACA)
Intro to Canoe
This one-day course focuses on basic solo and tandem canoe skills. Presentations include dressing to paddle safely and potential paddling hazards. Practice of simple rescues and a basic set of paddling skills prepare students to maneuver safely and comfortably on still water.
Location: Heart Lake Program Center
Cost: $60 ACA member/$70 non-member/$100 including ACA membership; includes instruction. ADK members receive a 10 percent discount. Canoe rentals are available with advanced notice.
June 7
ACA Intro to Kayak

Wild Adirondack Vegetables
4:30 till 8:30 with an hour for dinner
Walk with herbalist Jane Desotelle who has collected wild vegetables her whole life. Learn her advice on ethical collecting so you can collect from the same areas for many years. Afterwards sample some of our collections will watching Jane’s detailed slides of wild vegetables, roots, leaves, and edible flowers.
Location: Heart Lake Program Center
Cost: $40/$45, includes instruction and delicious hearty home cooked dinner.

Leave No Trace Trainer
The Leave No Trace (LNT) Trainer Course is a vital component of the nationwide LNT program. Participants receive introductory training in LNT skills and ethics in a condensed two-day format. The Trainer Course assists the student participants in learning more about the seven principles of Leave No Trace and techniques for disseminating these low-impact skills.
Location: Heart Lake Program Center
Cost: $75/$83, includes instruction, meals and use of group gear.
June 16-19
American Canoe Association Instructor Certification
This four-day course is designed to help outdoor educators and leaders, outfitters and enthusiasts develop the skills and teaching technique needed to safely lead others by canoe and kayak. Successful participants will be certified in solo and tandem canoe and solo recreational/touring kayak on both flat and moving water.
Location: Heart Lake Program Center
Cost: $350/$390, includes instruction and certifications.

Trailless Peak Day Hike - Esther Mt.
Uncomfortable approaching “trailless” high peaks on your own? This one-day course will introduce you to the nuances of hiking off trail through a guided trip to the summit of Esther Mt. (Elevation: 4,240 ft., Distance: 9.5+/- miles round-trip) We’ll discuss safe low-impact travel, route selection, off trail navigation, and the rich natural history of the Adirondacks. Due to the physically strenuous nature of these hikes, participants should have prior hiking experience, be in good physical condition and prepared to spend (in some cases) up to 12 hours hiking.
Location: Meets in the field.
Cost: $55/$60, includes instruction.

Backpacking Series - The Dix Range
These trips are designed for those who have experience hiking and backpacking and who are looking for guided backcountry experience in pursuit of climbing “trailless” High Peaks. Elevations: Macomb 4,405’; South Dix 4,060’; East Dix 4,102’; Hough 4,400’; Dix 4,857’ Distance: 15 +/- miles round-trip. More about the Backpacking Series here.
