FEBRUARY Education Programs -2008
February 2nd GPS 101
This course will provide an introduction to Global Positioning Systems. We’ll discuss how GPS works, including coordinate systems and other associated terminology, and explain the uses and limitations of GPS. Throughout the course, we’ll go outside and conduct field exercises to solidify our new skills. Cost: $63/$69; includes instruction and use of equipment.
February 2nd Trailless Peak Series: Street & Nye
Whether you are working on your Winter 46, uncomfortable approaching “trailless” high peaks on your own, or just looking for a great winter hike in the mountains, these one-day guided trips are for you. The Street (4,166’) and Nye (3,895’) trip will be an 8.5-mile round trip hike. This hike is strenuous and will require a full day of snowshoeing. Cost: $50/$57; includes instruction.
February 3rd Intro to Snowshoeing
Please join ADK at the beautiful Heart Lake Program Center to spend the day snowshoeing on our wonderful trails. We will provide the snowshoes and instruction for these guided hikes around our property, as well as sharing bits of natural history including tips on animal tracking and winter ecology. Hikes may include climbing Mt. Jo or snowshoeing to a lean-to to enjoy hot chocolate and enjoy the incredible scenery of the High Peaks. Great for the whole family! Time: 10 am – 3 pm. Cost: $30/$35 adults, $10/$12 kids under 16; includes instruction and snowshoes.

Esther (4,240) is a 9.5-mile round trip hike. This hike is strenuous and will require a full day of snowshoeing. Cost: $50/$57; includes instruction.
February 10th Intro to Backcountry Skiing
Are you a cross-country skier who wishes to move out of groomed cross-country ski areas, develop your technique, and expand your experience into the backcountry on varied terrain? Then this is the course for you! This introductory backcountry ski workshop will help you gain an understanding of the equipment and technique needed to ski on un-groomed surfaces. Cost: $50/$57; includes instruction.
February 16th-18th Winter Camping 101
Have you mastered summer hiking and camping? Are you eager to begin winter explorations, but lack the confidence or the know-how? This experiential, cold-weather workshop will cover the fundamentals of equipment, nutrition, low impact camping, and safety. We will travel by snowshoe to a backcountry camping spot where participants will learn how to set up camp, cook, stay warm and dry, and be prepared for the unexpected in the demanding conditions of winter. Cost: $175/$195; includes instruction, group gear, and food.

February 29th - March 2nd Winter Family Weekend I
Treat your family to a late winter getaway at the Adirondak Loj. Join us for fun outdoor activities ranging from snowshoeing and skiing to looking for animal tracks, building snow forts, sledding, and creating works of art. Meet new friends, play games, listen to stories, and relax by the fireplace. This program is ideal for, but not limited to families with children ages 8-12 that are interested in getting out and enjoying the beauty of the Adirondacks in winter. Cost: $140/$195 kids/adults, $155/$215 non-member
