Binghamton Home to Newest ADK Chapter
The Binghamton area is now home to the newest chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK).
The ADK Board of Directors approved the new chapter at a meeting at ADK headquarters in Lake George on Saturday, March 15, after receiving a petition signed by 25 ADK members supporting it. The creation of the Binghamton area ADK chapter will provide local outdoor lovers with numerous opportunities to enjoy hiking, canoeing, kayaking, cross-country skiing and other activities through chapter outings. It will also offer opportunities for members to get involved in conservation efforts and give them a greater voice on local and statewide environmental issues.
The Adirondack Mountain Club, founded in 1922, is one of America’s premier outdoor recreation organizations, with more than 28,000 members. But ADK is much more than just a hiking club. ADK is a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to protecting New York’s Forest Preserve and other wild lands and waters through conservation and advocacy, environmental education and responsible recreation. ADK now has 25 local chapters in New York state and one in New Jersey.
Individual ADK chapters organize a wide variety outings and activities geared to different ages, interests and abilities.
“I want this to be an all encompassing group,” said Gail Weyna, the Binghamton Chapter chair. “I’d like to attract young families and offer outings that accommodate toddlers and young children.”
Gail said the club will be organizing regular trips to the Adirondacks as well as outings to natural areas closer to home. Gail said she also wants the chapter to focus on educating the public on how to be responsible users of the state’s natural resources.
The Binghamton Chapter will hold a planning and organizational meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, March 31, at the Gander Mountain store, 528 Harry L Drive, Johnson City. Topics for discussion will include outing ideas and establishing a chapter newsletter. Chapter members, ADK members-at-large and members of the public interested in ADK are encouraged to attend.
