Let Governor Cuomo and the Adirondack Park Agency know that there is strong support for a new wilderness area in the central Adirondacks.

The Adirondack Park Agency (APA) is taking up the issue of formal classification of the first phase of the 65,000 acres of new Forest Preserve lands in the process of being purchased by the State of New York from The Nature Conservancy (TNC). Governor Andrew Cuomo announced this historic purchase last summer. Lands will be purchased over the next four years. These are lands formerly owned by Finch Paper in Glens Falls. Last December, the state bought the first parcel of 22,000 acres surrounding the Essex Chain Lakes and lands including 7 miles of the Hudson River and 5 miles of the Cedar River. The state will shortly complete the purchases for lands at the confluence of the Indian and Hudson rivers as well as the inholding around OK Slip Pond. This historic purchase provides a tremendous opportunity to create a new Hudson Headwaters Wilderness Area. This new 40,000-acre Wilderness Area should be fully evaluated as part of the APA’s formal Forest Preserve classification process now underway. We need to show the strong support for Wilderness across New York and beyond for this exciting proposal.

National Trails Day
Come join us in our celebration of our nation's trails. This year ADK will be hosting its National Trails Day event out of the Adirondak Loj and Wilderness Campground. We will be celebrating this day by completing a variety of trail projects. Camping will be provided for free at the Wilderness Campground; following the event there will be a barbecue, music, and raffle.

Wilderness Campground
A Campground Host is an ADK member who is an on-site representative of the Adirondack Mountain Club and has enthusiasm and love for the outdoor environment. As a Campground Host you will greet campers upon their arrival, be accessible to assist campers, explain the campground rules, and assist ADK staff where needed. In return, you will receive a free campsite for up to two people, three meals a day, and free use of specific ADK facilities when available.

Campground Hosts are selected on a first-come, first-served basis. Some of the criteria are: camping experience, public contact experience, available time, at least 21 years of age, and favorable health conditions that allow you to carry out the responsibilities.

For more information please contact: Doug Paquette, Campground Host Coordinator, 518-383-0017, email.

Volunteer Naturalists support our interpretive programs at the Heart Lake Program Center by serving as Nature Museum docents, leading walks and talks, and even summit hosting on top of Mt. Jo. Volunteer training, uniform shirt, free parking, and lunch will be provided. If interested please fill out a volunteer application.

Questions regarding this position can be directed to: Thea Moruzzi, Education Director, 518-523-3480 Ext. 19, outreach@adk.org

Volunteer Summit Steward

Volunteer Summit StewardIs hiking a mountain your idea of fun? Does spending the day on a summit talking with hikers sound like paradise? Are you hardy to the elements, like alpine plants? Then we have the position for you! We’re looking for a few dedicated, hardy souls to join the volunteer Summit Steward program.

Volunteer stewards encourage hikers to walk on the solid bedrock above timberline, answer questions, do trail work, and participate in research on the summits. They help the Summit Steward Program provide coverage on additional peaks and help with essential projects.

Interested in learning more? Contact Julia Goren, summit steward coordinator, at 518-523-3480 Ext. 18 or summit@adk.org.
