View from Black MountainProper planning and preparation are essential for a safe and successful hiking or backpacking trip. This information will help you plan a backcountry trip that is both safe and enjoyable for you, while having minimal impact on wildlife and natural resources.

Getting Started
Interested in hiking, backpacking, canoeing, kayaking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing, but don’t know how to get started? New to the area and looking for people to share your outdoor adventures? ADK’s 27 chapters in New York and northern New Jersey host hundreds of outings year-round, both in the Adirondacks and across New York State. Many chapters post their Outing Schedules online.
