Black Fly Affair: A Peace and Love Cruise

ADK will be taking to the water aboard the Lac du Saint Sacrement on Saturday, May 18, for Black Fly Affair: A Peace & Love Cruise. The 60s-themed cruise on beautiful Lake George, and the Club's biggest fundraiser of the year, will feature dining, silent and live auctions, beer and wine tastings and dancing to the music of Standing Room Only. Dress code is dressy, 60s style (tie dye optional, hiking boots mandatory). Tickets are $75 per person. Proceeds will supports ADK's efforts to prevent the spread of aquatic invasives that threaten our Adirondack waters. You can also show you care about clean water by supporting this important event through auction donations, cash donations or sponsorships. Volunteer opportunities are also available. Lake George Property Work Day

National Trails Day

American Hiking Society's National Trails Day® is the largest celebration of our nation's trail system. National Trails Day occurs the first Saturday in June each year. Events are held all across the country and range from hiking trips to trail maintenance projects. The Adirondack Mountain Club has been hosting a National Trails Day event since its inception. Around 100 volunteers participate in ADK's event each year. Come join us in our celebration of our nation's trails. This year ADK will be hosting its National Trails Day event out of the Adirondak Loj and Wilderness Campground. We will be celebrating this day by completing a variety of trail projects. Camping will be provided for free at the Wilderness Campground; following the event there will be a barbecue, music, and raffle.

Trail Work Weekend, High Peaks Wilderness

ADK Spring Outing

The Laurentian Chapter is pleased to announce "Spring in the North Country," the 2013 ADK Spring Outing.
Spring Outing will be based at SUNY Potsdam in St. Lawrence County. There will be a wide variety of outings including hikes, paddling trips, road cycling, mountain biking, nature walks, historic tours, at all levels of difficulty. Several events will be especially attractive to children and their parents.
The area is the St. Lawrence River Valley and the north slope of the Adirondacks. It includes lakes and rivers, waterfalls, small to medium-sized mountains, and a variety of cultural attractions. In conjunction with Spring Outing, Adirondack folk musicians Dan Berggren, Dan Duggan, and Peggy Lynn will perform an evening concert at Snell Hall, a performance venue of the Crane School of Music.
Registration is now open and closes on June 5, unless capacity is reached before then.

Goodnow Mountain Trail Pojrect

This is a well-used fire tower trail by both students at the nearby SUNY ESF research station and visitors staying in the Newcomb/Long Lake region. Wood steps and drainage structures will be built along the trail. Participants will camp at a private, front country site on Catlin Lake, which is a short drive from the trailhead. There is a $100 participation fee.
Open to all ages, participants will camp nearby the trail project and work on a section of trail as a team. Arrive at base camp on Sunday evening for dinner & orientation. The participation fee is at the end each project description.

Elk Lake Trail Project

Located in the southern High Peaks, Elk Lake is situated in the middle of a private 12,000 acre preserve with an extensive network of trails. Participants will work on various trail projects including sidecutting, blowdown removal, and constructing bridging. Volunteers will stay in the historic Elk Lake Lodge for the week and will be served breakfast and dinner in the dining room. After work and dinner, participants will be free to explore the property. Boats are available to use on the lake. There is a $300 participation fee.

Due to the physically strenuous nature of this hike, participants should have prior hiking experience, be in good physical condition, be properly attired and equipped, and prepared to hike (in some cases) up to 12 hours per day. A quick hiking pace (2+ mph) will be required in order to reach our destination. As with any course, learning new skills will be our primary focus, and although every effort will be made to do so, there is no guarantees of reaching the summit. Hurricane Mountain Trail Project

Participants will relocate a short section of trail that has been destroyed by beaver activity. They will make camp at a lean-to.
These trail projects are reserved for high school aged teenagers (ages 14-17) who have a desire to spend a week in the woods camping in the backcountry and experiencing trail work. For all of the five-day projects, participants arrive at base camp on Sunday evening for dinner and orientation. Participants will be back at base camp late afternoon on Friday. Long Lake Canoe Trip, High Peaks Wilderness

Relocating existing pit privies and the removal of litter from campsites that are alongside Long Lake will be the main focus of the project. Participants will canoe a substantial distance every day to reach each lean-to. Depending upon how many privies need to be relocated, the crew may work on a trail project on a section of the Northville-Lake Placid Trail that parallels Long Lake. Arrive Sunday evening at base camp for dinner and orientation. Participants will be out of the woods late afternoon on Thursday. There is a $100 participation fee.

The 2013 ADK Fall Outing, hosted by at-large members from southern New Jersey, will be held in the New Jersey Pine Barrens.
Come out and play in this unique environment of the NJ Pine Barrens. Enjoy a weekend of paddling, hiking, and biking at the 60th annual ADK Fall Outing. Explore the cedar waters and pine forests of this internationally important ecological region that is 1.1 million acres in size and occupies 22 percent of New Jersey's land area. The full weekend package includes dormitory-style lodging, Friday evening dinner, and breakfast and lunch on Saturday and Sunday. A gourmet catered dinner at a local country club on Saturday will also be offered. Local musicians will provide entertainment after dinner on Saturday.

This is a great refresher course or a good place to learn the basics of map and compass skills. The first day will be an introduction to the fundamentals of map reading, compass use, triangulation, and identification of terrain features. On day two, participants will put their new found skills to the test with a guided bushwhack in the Heart Lake area. You’ll go home with much more confidence in your ability to use a map and compass when it really counts!

Trailless High Peak Hike: Seward, Donaldson & Emmons

Whether you are working on your 46, uncomfortable approaching the high peaks on your own, or just looking for a great hike in the mountains, this one-day guided trip to the summits of Seward, Donaldson, and Emmons (4040 ft-4361 ft) is for you. Round-trip distance is 15 miles.
Due to the physically strenuous nature of this hike, participants should have prior hiking experience, be in good physical condition, be properly attired and equipped, and prepared to hike (in some cases) up to 12 hours per day. A quick hiking pace (2+ mph) will be required in order to reach our destination. As with any course, learning new skills will be our primary focus, and although every effort will be made to do so, there is no guarantees of reaching the summit. Weather, safety, and group ability will be determining factors. The terrain encountered is typical of the High Peaks region, so be prepared for anything from rocks and roots, to mud, blowdown, stream crossings, steep slopes, rock slabs and slides, and so on. This intense two-day workshop with Wilderness Medical Associates will teach students how to deal with medical emergencies when they are miles from help and
dialing 911 is not an option. Through hands-on scenarios and lecture structure,
students will learn to assess patients, become certified in wilderness first
aid, adult CPR, and anaphylaxis training.
Class time will be spent both inside and out, rain, shine, or snow, (just like in real life!), so please
