Update: Both the Senate and Assembly have passed budget resolutions that reject the governor's park closure plan and provide funding to keep all state parks and historic sites open. However, the budget for fiscal 2010-11 has not been approved.
We Need Your Help to Prevent the Closure of State Parks
The Adirondack Mountain Club strongly opposes Governor Paterson’s plan to close dozens of New York’s State Parks and Historic Sites. The plan would save a few million dollars, an insignificant amount in context of a $134 billion executive budget. What's more, that savings estimate does not take into account the significant economic activity that parks generate. New York’s beautiful parks and historic sites attract visitors from out of state who spend millions of dollars, creating jobs and generating local and state sales tax revenue. This plan may actually cost New York more than it saves.
A full list of parks and historic sites targeted for closure can be viewed here.
Here's what you can do to help keep your favorite state park or historic site open: State Senator Jose Serrano, chair of the Senate state parks committee, and Assemblyman Steve Englebright, chair of the Assembly state parks committee, have asked their colleagues to sign letters opposing the park closure plan. Time is of the essence, so please call or e-mail your state Senator and Assembly member and ask them to add their names to these letters.
Senator Serrano’s sign-on letter is available here.
