…and help ensure that our wild lands and waters remain a magnificent natural resource for generations to come.
Dear ADK Supporter:
ADK was a key party in a federal court victory in the battle over power plant emissions of mercury that despoil Adirondack lakes. Change in Washington brings to a successful close an eight year legal battle to prevent utilities and “Big Coal” from monkey wrenching the acid rain control provisions of the Clean Air Act. With this change we now have an opportunity to play a leading role in addressing the critical issue of climate change in the Adirondacks. ADK helped craft a Catskill State Land Master Plan that added thousands of acres to wilderness. We went to court to keep the state from reneging on a commitment to keep Adirondack wilderness lakes motor-free. Trail work included construction of a new Lyon Mountain trail and a great hiking bridge spanning the Neversink River. ADK lodging facilities saw the highest number of guests in recorded history. ADK also completed the Forest Preserve Project, an original planning document mapping out the boundaries of the Adirondack Forest Preserve for years to come – a project undertaken exclusively by ADK. And most of all, ADK experienced the greatest participation by volunteers across all program areas since its inception. It is this level of participation, mobilization and involvement of our members at times like these that constitute the greatest hope for ADK’s continued effectiveness.
Turning to perhaps what will be our greatest challenge is facing the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. While it may not seem to be the best of times to make an appeal for financial support, we must because it is times like these that put our wilderness lands and trails in the greatest peril. It is in times like these that local and state governments look for ways to cut costs and increase revenues. The environment is often first on the chopping block and environmental organizations have already begun to feel the blow.
But if we stop supporting the institutions that work to protect our natural resources and open spaces, we stand to lose them. In these harsh economic times, our vigilance is needed more than ever. At times like these, we can either withhold our support or make an even greater effort to direct our support toward the ideals and values we believe in. Each and every donation makes a difference in the continuing effort to protect our wild places.
Please consider making a tax-deductible donation of ANY size today, to keep our programs effective. I am relying on your year-end contribution to maintain this effectiveness through the tough economic times ahead. On behalf of the entire ADK family, thank you for your generosity.
