The Adirondack Mountain Club is accepting applications for the following positions:

  • Professional Trail Crew Member
  • Volunteer Trail Crew Leader

Professional Trail Crew Member

The Adirondack Mountain Club’s professional trail crew conducts maintenance and rehabilitates backcountry trails in both the Adirondack and Catskill parks. Using basic hand tools, a wide variety of trail stabilization structures are constructed. The crew camps for a week at a time nearby work locations. Training is provided prior to the field season.

Qualifications & Responsibilities: Applicants should have experience using trail building tools and be familiar with trail reconstruction/maintenance techniques. Candidates should have the desire to be both physically and mentally challenged while working in the out-of-doors in extreme conditions, to include but not limited to rain, snow, sleet, gales, hot and cold temperatures, insects and lots of mud! Candidates should have the desire to work on solo trail projects and as a team member on a 4-6 person crew.

Applicants should have experience backpacking with ability to carry a heavy load for a long distance. Crew members share in the packing of group camping gear, tools and food, along with personal gear to the various project sites and assist in food preparation. Crew members are responsible for maintaining trail tools, equipment and the trail cabin facility to the highest standard.

Position Dates: Late May – August 15, extended season available

Work Schedule: 5 days in the backcountry (including weekends and holidays) 1-1/2 days off

Compensation: $8 per hour, plus room and board.

 

Volunteer Trail Crew Leader

The Volunteer Trail Crew Leader is a paid seasonal employee of the Adirondack Mountain Club, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s principal partner in the maintenance and reconstruction of backcountry trails on Forest Preserve lands. The Volunteer Trail Crew Leader is responsible for working with, educating, supervising and motivating volunteers. Crews live and work in a backcountry setting. Approximately half of the trail projects in a given season are specifically for high school age participants. The Volunteer Trail Crew Leader should provide for a safe, positive, and educational volunteer experience while accomplishing the highest quality trail work possible.

  

Qualifications: Applicants should have prior experience leading and teaching groups of all ages in a wilderness setting and have trail work experience while keeping an open mind to learn new trail construction/maintenance techniques. Candidates should have an exceptional ability to motivate and engage volunteers under adverse conditions (i.e. insects, mud, poor weather, and difficult group dynamics) and the capability to keep a positive attitude while supervising a group to accomplish the task at hand. Applicants should have experience backpacking and the capacity to carry tools and supplies for a long distance. Candidates should have a current first aid certification and knowledge of low-impact camping techniques.

Summit Steward

The High Peaks Summit Steward is responsible for educating the hiking public about the rare and fragile alpine communities of the Adirondack High Peaks Region in New York State. In addition, the Summit Steward is responsible for conducting biological inventories and monitoring for the New York Natural Heritage Program; and alpine restoration. Stewards spend five days at a time camping in remote backcountry sites and complete strenuous hikes each day to a nearby summit. The Summit Steward Program is a cooperative effort of the Adirondack Mountain Club, the Adirondack Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and New York State Natural Heritage Program.

Qualifications: BS/graduate work in natural sciences; environmental interpretation/education; ecology; botany; or related field. Work experience in field research; environmental interpretation/education; living in remote backcountry settings; and working with diverse populations. Candidates should possess excellent communication, organizational, public speaking, and interpersonal skills. Applicants should have knowledge of natural history, alpine ecology, botany, and of the Adirondack landscape. French language ability and wilderness first aid preferred. Applicants must have a strong desire to be challenged physically and mentally, while working in the remote backcountry in extreme conditions.

Position: Summit Steward

Location: High Peaks Wilderness - Adirondack Mountains, Lake Placid, NY

Position Dates: June – Labor Day Weekend

Work Schedule: 5 days in the backcountry (including weekends and holidays) 2 days off

Compensation: $8 per hour, plus housing and food for days off provided
